How to purchase the perfect dishwasher– from start to finish.

Ever wonder how you buy the perfect appliance from start to finish?
Have you purchased “what you thought the perfect appliance” only to find it isn’t? Maybe you have walked into an appliance store and felt overwhelmed? Or you are building a new home… whatever your situation we have seen the potential challenges and are here to help!

The team at Appliance Factory Mattress Kingdom is here to help you purchase your new appliances. Over the next months we will blog on different appliance types.

SELECTING & BUYING YOUR NEW DISHWASHER

Step 1: Prepare yourself for entering the appliance store.
Dishwashers have had big advancements so not pre-planning can make your visit stressful.

*MEASURING THE SPACE: Before you arrive at the store measure your Dishwasher Opening.
              It’s important you take 3 measurements: 1) HEIGHT, 2) DEPTH, & 3) WIDTH

Note: If you cannot slide out your Dishwasher without floor or counter-top alterations you might want a custom estimate. This will cost you $50 and a professional will come to your home, help you plan, and let you know associated job costs*.
*KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GETTING YOURSELF INTO… Additional costs & points to consider: While it might seem cost efficient to self-install it can be messy.  We send a certified trade partner to install your unit. You pay them an install fee + associated parts at time of delivery.

Step 2: Choose your design and finish.
Maybe you have existing appliances you are trying to match that are a specific color or have a particular handle style or brand name? Or you are looking to re-design or create your kitchen?

External Finishes
  • Black/White – While stainless steel is typically found in most showrooms/warehouses many manufacturers make black and white. You will find sometimes these pieces need to be ordered (so plan for potential extra time between order and delivery time).

  • Stainless Steel- Stainless steel is very popular and adds a level of richness.
Note: It can be prone to fingerprints so be sure to pick up some stainless steel cleaner at time of purchase! We have a mineral based product that works well.
Note: Stainless steel will also not be magnetic so keep that in mind.

  • Stainless-like – The finish resembles stainless yet are mostly smudge proof & magnetic. They are easy to clean yet don’t have the same richness you find in stainless steel.

  •         Black Stainless- Some manufactures such as LG & Samsung now carry black stainless. These pieces still have the beauty and richness that you’d get with a stainless finish only are darker and a little more smudge/fingerprint resistant.

Internal Tubs – you will find two options available.

Control Panels- there are two options available here as well.

Step 3: Your basic features.

Wash/Rinse: Today’s dishwashers utilize less water/energy; many have steam!

Drying: There are many different drying options. You can select an energy efficient air/fan or more traditional heat drying. Stainless tubs capture heat more, so this will also help drying.

Organization: Many features will help you save space and get better results such as adjustable racks, specialized holders, third rack drawers and more.

Noise: Higher level dishwashers run more quietly. Lower decibels (dBA) are quieter; models running at 40 dBA are almost silent. Note: Units with a disposal are louder.

Disposals: With some models you don’t need to scrape/pre-rinse your dishes.

Energy Star: Machines with a Tier One are highly efficient while ones with a Tier Three are the most efficient units on the market.

Step 4: Understand the Style.

Built-In: Classic Style – typically 24” width.

Compact: Looks Standard but Skinnier. For apartments and homes with less square footage.

Drawer: Can run separate smaller loads.

Portable: For spaces without room for a built-in option. It connects to your sink and moves easily.

Please note that options other than standard dishwashers aren’t as common and many times will need to be ordered at time of purchase and can take a few weeks before delivery – so please plan accordingly.
