Benefits of Having the Right Pillow

Have you ever woke up and had a stiff neck or back, tossed and turned all night, or kept a spouse up all night from snoring? Most would associate this with the mattress they have, but in many cases it is the combination of the pillow and mattress. Today, let’s focus on the pillow side and determine what factors play into a good night’s sleep!

What is the purpose of the pillow? The first reason is simply comfort. The more comfortable you are in bed the easier falling asleep becomes. The second reason is commonly overlooked by most and that is having correct sleeping posture and correct alignment.  Proper support creates alignment for your neck and back with the spine; therefore, helping to prevent the stiffness in the upper body that we mentioned in the beginning.

How long should I have a pillow? If you have an older pillow, it might be time to get a new one.  Pillows that have been used for over 18 months or so should be replaced. The materials in pillows can trap illness, bad bacteria, oils, mold, dead skin cells, and even dust mites. Having these little things can make a huge difference and can trigger allergies and cause you to get sick or prevent you from getting better when you are sick. It can also cause acne breakouts. We suggest using a pillow protector to prolong the life of your pillows. Make sure to wash them at least once a month if not more. You can also do a pillow test to see if it is time to get a new one. Fold your pillow in half and let go. If you pillow springs back, it’s still pretty good to use. But, if your pillow doesn’t spring back fast, it’s a sign to replace it.

When looking for the right comfort we have to look at your sleeping position to create the proper alignment.  Here is a look at the different sleeping positions:

Side Sleepers
Side sleepers will conform better to a thicker or firm pillow that fills in the neck and mattress. This helps keep the neck and head aligned to the spine. Having a pillow that is firm also helps create the correct spacing between your ears and shoulders.

Back Sleepers
Back sleepers need a medium thickness pillow that gives just enough support. The height is neither over nor under sized keeping the head from tilting too high or too low.

Stomach Sleepers
Lastly is a stomach sleeper, which needs a softer flat pillow that lifts the head just off the surface to align the neck and spine.

Two or all of the above
There are a handful of people that tend to be both a side sleeper and a back sleeper or even all three. For this case, you will probably want a medium thickness pillow or you could even have a couple of different pillows for the sleep occasion.

Now that we have these basic fundamentals and understanding of the benefits of having the right pillow, go out and test some. Stop by one of our stores to find the right pillow for your needs; you might be surprised to get amazing better sleep!

Why our bed sheets are the most conformable!

Ben from our Parker location is here to talk about sheets with you.

At Appliance Factory & Mattress Kingdom, we are a one-stop-shop for all of your mattress needs. We offer mattresses, pillows, sheets, and even mattress covers. Stop by our stores to talk to a mattress expert!

In this video, Ben addresses the sheet myth that the higher the thread count, the better the sheet is. This is not true.

When you sleep, your sheets need air flow. When you have a higher thread count, it reduces the air flow making the air trapped.  If you are a hot sleeper, meaning you get hot or sweat throughout the night, the heat from your body needs to be released out.

We do have new technology sheets that can help you have better air flow and still be soft and comfy for your needs. We offer dry tech mesh sheets and hyper wool sheets. Stop by one of our stores today to test the sheets out yourself.

How to Choose the Right Pillow for You

Hello, this is Joe Sweeney from the Appliance Factory & Mattress Kingdom, in Grand Junction Colorado.

We are often times so wrapped up in to thinking that our poor night’s rest is only due to a bad mattress.  Actually, the mattress is just one part of the equation.  Your true discomfort may actually be coming from your old worn out pillow! This post is aimed at helping you find the right pillow just perfect for your sleeping needs.

First of all, we need to determine how you sleep at night.  For someone who sleeps on their stomach, you will need a fairly flat pillow.  If you sleep on your back, you will need a medium thickness in your pillow.  If you are a side sleeper, you will usually use the thickest pillows out there depending on your body frame.  For someone who sleeps in all positions throughout the night, we recommend a medium thickness pillow.

Next you will need to find the right filling material for your pillow. We recommend trying several different materials to find the right fit.  For stomach sleepers, a firm pillow might not be ideal. You probably need more of a soft pillow. For warmer sleepers, a Bed Gear Storm Series pillow with cooling gel might be the right fit for you. The cooling gel makes the pillow nice and chill to keep your body temperature down. There are also memory foam pillows. This material adjusts and fit into your every curve.

Today I would like to introduce you to our line of Bed Gear Pillows.  Bed Gear offers a wide variety of pillow types to help you customize a great night’s sleep.  Beg Gear offers pillows that are specific to your sleep style. Whether you are a side sleeper, a back sleeper, or a stomach sleeper we can help you find the pillow that’s right for you.  Many of their pillows have unique “cooling qualities” to them, so if you’re a “hot sleeper” you can rest assured that you’ll stay cooler throughout the night.

These different options might sound amazing, but in the end the best idea is to go into one of our stores and actually try out the pillows. When you try out the pillows, you will find the perfect fit.

Come see us today so we can help you select the sleep solution that best suits your needs. We hope to see you soon and make your every night the best sleep of your life!

Who doesn’t love cranberry? The dramatic dark red is like fall itself- playful yet serious, rich and jewel-like with a hint of the icy winter to come. Cranberry plays well with a variety of other colors, from earth tones to other jewel tones, and can even be treated as a neutral alongside blacks and greys. Add a little cranberry to your fall decor with one of these striking home accents.

Cranberry Throw Pillows- Well-placed cranberry throw pillows give the subtle vibe of autumn without having to change anything else in your home. The deep red looks good on just about any color couch or chair. Choose a throw pillow with a fun cranberry print for a solid-color sofa, and opt for a solid cranberry pillow for a seat with a vibrant print.

Cranberry Candles- For a fragrant fall touch to your living room, cranberry candles look as beautiful as they smell. Give your home a pop of color as well as an uplifting autumn scent with a cranberry candle that brings the bountiful harvest right into your house.

Actual Cranberries- Go full Pilgrim this fall and decorate your home with thoughtfully-placed bowls of actual cranberries. 3 Benefits of Adjustable Bases

There is one common statement that I hear from my customers who own an adjustable bases; “I Love it.” I have yet to have someone say they don’t.  There are three common reason and benefits to adjustable bases that everyone should consider that we can all share in.
  1. Alleviation of pressure on the lower back and other problematic areas.  From my personal experience and my customers this is probably the largest benefit that we talk about.  When you lie on your back without an adjustable you might not notice the pressure and tightness in your lower back, but lift your head and feet slightly with an adjustable base and you can feel that pressure and tightness that you didn’t even know you had just ease away.  From a comfort standpoint this is the largest benefit and one that every loves.
  2. Ease of Reading and Watching TV.  We all have tried to lie in bed and read, holding the book over you head and having it fall in your face, propping our head up with pillows and getting a crick in our neck, or trying to watch TV and not able to get comfortable.  I take it for granted now that I can just lift my head up until I’m at the perfect angle to watch tv, work on my laptop and stay in my Pajamas.
  3. Sleep Apnea, heart burn ect.  This is one of those things that depending on you talk to depends on the answer you get.  While it doesn’t fix or cure these issues I can tell you from personal experience that I don’t nearly have the same heart burn or acid reflux I use to.  Now I could probably just skip the evening snack, but it’s my favorite.  There are countless health benefits that have been reported for adjustable bases; from sleep apnea to helping with poor blood circulation.  Even if you don’t have poor circulation we could all benefit from a little help.
An adjustable base isn’t just about comfort in bed, while that is a great reason.  It’s about health, better sleeping, better support, and overall getting the type of sleep you deserve that makes you feel refreshed and ready to go in the morning. I would say it’s not for everyone but as a stomach sleeper my self; switching to an adjustable base and sleeping on my back, I have never felt better!

What problems do you have sleeping? I bet that an adjustable base can help. Give us a call at one of our 16 store locations.
