6 Signs You Need a New Mattress

People don't really think about it too often, but having a great mattress is crucial for your heath. You spend about one third of your time in your bed sleeping and after a while, it can ware out and you have to replace it. There are other reasons besides the age of your mattress of why you may need to replace it. Take a look at these reasons and if any of these apply to you, it's time to look at getting a new one.

1. Your mattress is old
The normal wear and tear of your mattress can really affect your sleeping without you even realizing it. If your mattress is 8-10 years old, it is time to look at getting a new one. You should also replace your pillows every 2 years as they can cause issues with your health too.

2. You are in pain
If you wake up with aches, numbness, back pain or neck pain this is a crucial signal that you need a new mattress. That old mattress is costing you a good night sleep and  can affect other areas of your health and life.  Even if you don't feel the pain and just wake up feeling  tired and groggy, but you slept 8 or more hours, you probably actually were tossing and turning not getting a full night's sleep. which leads us to our next reason.

3. You toss and turn
If you frequently wake up during the middle of the night and you cannot get comfortable because you toss and turn, it's time to replace it. If you sleep with a partner, you could be also disrupting their sleep making them suffer as well.

4. You have a dent in your bed
If you see any visual signs or can feel signs of lumps and bumps in your mattress, this is a sign that you need a new one. Coils and foam can wear out over time and you lose out on the right support that you need for your spine and the rest of your body.

5. You sleep somewhere else
If you end up sleeping somewhere else like your guest bed , couch, or on the ground while camping can be indications that you need an new mattress. Most people notice this when they travel to visit families and either sleep in a hotel or a guest bed and find that they get better sleep or it feels super comfy.

6. You suffer from asthma or your allergies are acting up
Your mattress can actually attract collect dust, dust mites, pet dander, and more. These allergens can trigger you to sneeze, cough, have a runny nose, scratchy throat, or have itchy or watery eyes that can last weeks. Your mattress can attract and have allergens such as pollen, mold, food, rodents, and more that can trigger asthma symptoms.

The Best Mattress Protectors and Why they are Important

Eric and Riley from Bedgear are here to talk to you about mattress protectors.

The big question that we hear is what is the purpose of a mattress protector? A mattress protector is a removable cloth that sits on top or zips around the mattress. The purpose of it is to protect your mattress. An old mattress can sometimes can build up dust mites, bed bugs, mold, and dead skin or dandruff in the mattress. These things can irritate and even harm people. The mattress protector can also help keep the mattress clean even from spills from spills or dirt. Let's say that you spill something on your mattress, you can just take it off and wash it.

You can clean the surface of a mattress with a vacuum cleaner, but it cannot remove things that are in the mattress which is where most of the grime goes. With a mattress protector, you can avoid substances from getting on and into your mattress. This will make your mattress last longer saving you money and keeping your safe.

Better technology protectors can protect the mattress, but also make it more comfortable the person sleeping on the mattress. Bedgear has a good, better, best program.

Their good mattress protector called the iProtect has performance technology that allows air to flow through to your mattress. Mattresses need to breath and you should allow air to transfer to it.

Bedgear's better mattress protector, Dry Tec, has the same technology as the iProtect mattress protector, but also has additional value that wicks away moisture from your body. Every night of sleep you actually loose a half of a liter of water. You may loose more depending on if it is hot and you sweat more.

The best mattress protector from Bedgear is called the Ver-Tex. This has the same technology as the Dry Tec, but as two more added features to it. This mattress protector can actually keep your body temperature regulated during the night. The material is actually cool to the touch.

The only real way to know which mattress protector is best for you is to check them out in person yourself. Stop by one of our locations and ask to see all of the different types of mattress protectors that we have. See you soon!

Traditional Innerspring VS Posturepedic Technology

Eric, the Mattress King, is here to show you the difference between a traditional innerspring mattress and a Posturepedic Technology innerspring mattress. He has samples of what the springs look like so you can see the difference.

Traditional innersprings  are hand tied, on top of each other, and are the same all around the whole mattress. There is no space in between the different springs. This makes the coils function more like one unit.

With Posturepedic Technology, the innersprings are pocketed individually and are a little more separate from each other. In the head and foot areas the springs are closer and are on top of each other. In the center of the mattress is where 50% of your weight. The coils have more space in between. With this zigzag pattern of the individual coils in the middle, it allows you to have more support. With the Posturepedic Technology, your body will be a lot straighter and your center third will not cave into the mattress as much. This can help you support your back and core and stay level while you sleep during the night.

Stop by one of our stores to feel the difference yourself. You might be surprised as to how much it can help you sleep better.

Benefits of Having the Right Pillow

Have you ever woke up and had a stiff neck or back, tossed and turned all night, or kept a spouse up all night from snoring? Most would associate this with the mattress they have, but in many cases it is the combination of the pillow and mattress. Today, let’s focus on the pillow side and determine what factors play into a good night’s sleep!

What is the purpose of the pillow? The first reason is simply comfort. The more comfortable you are in bed the easier falling asleep becomes. The second reason is commonly overlooked by most and that is having correct sleeping posture and correct alignment.  Proper support creates alignment for your neck and back with the spine; therefore, helping to prevent the stiffness in the upper body that we mentioned in the beginning.

How long should I have a pillow? If you have an older pillow, it might be time to get a new one.  Pillows that have been used for over 18 months or so should be replaced. The materials in pillows can trap illness, bad bacteria, oils, mold, dead skin cells, and even dust mites. Having these little things can make a huge difference and can trigger allergies and cause you to get sick or prevent you from getting better when you are sick. It can also cause acne breakouts. We suggest using a pillow protector to prolong the life of your pillows. Make sure to wash them at least once a month if not more. You can also do a pillow test to see if it is time to get a new one. Fold your pillow in half and let go. If you pillow springs back, it’s still pretty good to use. But, if your pillow doesn’t spring back fast, it’s a sign to replace it.

When looking for the right comfort we have to look at your sleeping position to create the proper alignment.  Here is a look at the different sleeping positions:

Side Sleepers
Side sleepers will conform better to a thicker or firm pillow that fills in the neck and mattress. This helps keep the neck and head aligned to the spine. Having a pillow that is firm also helps create the correct spacing between your ears and shoulders.

Back Sleepers
Back sleepers need a medium thickness pillow that gives just enough support. The height is neither over nor under sized keeping the head from tilting too high or too low.

Stomach Sleepers
Lastly is a stomach sleeper, which needs a softer flat pillow that lifts the head just off the surface to align the neck and spine.

Two or all of the above
There are a handful of people that tend to be both a side sleeper and a back sleeper or even all three. For this case, you will probably want a medium thickness pillow or you could even have a couple of different pillows for the sleep occasion.

Now that we have these basic fundamentals and understanding of the benefits of having the right pillow, go out and test some. Stop by one of our stores to find the right pillow for your needs; you might be surprised to get amazing better sleep!

Why our bed sheets are the most conformable!

Ben from our Parker location is here to talk about sheets with you.

At Appliance Factory & Mattress Kingdom, we are a one-stop-shop for all of your mattress needs. We offer mattresses, pillows, sheets, and even mattress covers. Stop by our stores to talk to a mattress expert!

In this video, Ben addresses the sheet myth that the higher the thread count, the better the sheet is. This is not true.

When you sleep, your sheets need air flow. When you have a higher thread count, it reduces the air flow making the air trapped.  If you are a hot sleeper, meaning you get hot or sweat throughout the night, the heat from your body needs to be released out.

We do have new technology sheets that can help you have better air flow and still be soft and comfy for your needs. We offer dry tech mesh sheets and hyper wool sheets. Stop by one of our stores today to test the sheets out yourself.

How to Choose the Right Pillow for You

Hello, this is Joe Sweeney from the Appliance Factory & Mattress Kingdom, in Grand Junction Colorado.

We are often times so wrapped up in to thinking that our poor night’s rest is only due to a bad mattress.  Actually, the mattress is just one part of the equation.  Your true discomfort may actually be coming from your old worn out pillow! This post is aimed at helping you find the right pillow just perfect for your sleeping needs.

First of all, we need to determine how you sleep at night.  For someone who sleeps on their stomach, you will need a fairly flat pillow.  If you sleep on your back, you will need a medium thickness in your pillow.  If you are a side sleeper, you will usually use the thickest pillows out there depending on your body frame.  For someone who sleeps in all positions throughout the night, we recommend a medium thickness pillow.

Next you will need to find the right filling material for your pillow. We recommend trying several different materials to find the right fit.  For stomach sleepers, a firm pillow might not be ideal. You probably need more of a soft pillow. For warmer sleepers, a Bed Gear Storm Series pillow with cooling gel might be the right fit for you. The cooling gel makes the pillow nice and chill to keep your body temperature down. There are also memory foam pillows. This material adjusts and fit into your every curve.

Today I would like to introduce you to our line of Bed Gear Pillows.  Bed Gear offers a wide variety of pillow types to help you customize a great night’s sleep.  Beg Gear offers pillows that are specific to your sleep style. Whether you are a side sleeper, a back sleeper, or a stomach sleeper we can help you find the pillow that’s right for you.  Many of their pillows have unique “cooling qualities” to them, so if you’re a “hot sleeper” you can rest assured that you’ll stay cooler throughout the night.

These different options might sound amazing, but in the end the best idea is to go into one of our stores and actually try out the pillows. When you try out the pillows, you will find the perfect fit.

Come see us today so we can help you select the sleep solution that best suits your needs. We hope to see you soon and make your every night the best sleep of your life!

4 Most Common Reasons People Purchase a New Mattress

1. Tossing & Turning
Tossing & Turning can lead to many sleepless nights. The most common reason being the type of mattress you own. It can be to soft or too firm, causing pressure and making you uncomfortable. You may be sleeping too hot or too cold also impacting your sleep.

2. Partner Disturbance
Having a restless partner to share a bed with can easily effect your sleep. Traditional spring mattresses do not isolate the motion transfer from your partner moving as great as memory foam & pocketed coil mattresses do.

3. Body Impressions
Typically you sleep in the same spot night after night causing your mattress to compress & conform to your body making an impression of your body. This could happen due to low quality material & inexpensive components leading to a less comfortable sleep.

4. Old Technology
There have been much advancement in mattress technology you may not be aware of. Older mattresses like spring mattresses are the most common types used but are arguably the worst for your sleep. Newer mattress technology like memory foam & latex is designed with the consumer in mind by ensuring a better night’s sleep through comfort & little to none motion transfer.

We recommend you purchase a new mattress every 8 years! Over the course of this time-frame your mattress accumulates weight due to dead skin cells and bugs! Who wants that?

Stop by one of our 16 locations to take the mattress test to see which mattress type is best for you. Have any questions about mattresses? Leave them in the comments section.

1. What position do you mostly sleep in at night?
  • Side
  • Back
  • Stomach
  • Toss and turn

2. If you didn’t sleep on a bed where would you sleep?
  • Floor
  • Couch
  • Recliner
  • Air mattress

  • 1-4
  • 5-9
  • 10+

4. What type of quality are you looking for?

The Benefits of a Mattress Protector

It amazes me in my line of work how many individuals are willing to purchase a mattress, and are not willing to invest in a mattress protector. When you think about it, the average person spends one third of their life in bed. The average person also looses about a half gallon of fluids as they sleep through evaporation. Where does all of that water go? It goes into the air, into the mattress, and a combination of both. As gross as that is to think about, consider what that does to an unprotected mattress.
There are numerous benefits to putting a mattress protector on your bed and the cost to invest is really not that much. First and foremost, a mattress protector will ensure that your mattress will remain free of bodily fluids and even dead skin cells, extending the life of the mattress. The second thing a mattress protector will do is ensure that your 60 or 120 day sleep guarantee is guaranteed. The importance of having the sleep guarantee is to ensure that you’ve picked out the right mattress for you. You would hate to be stuck with a mattress you don’t like just because you opted out of getting an affordable mattress protector.

Not all mattress protectors are created equal. Some mattress protectors do their job, but also block out the cooling effects of some of the higher quality memory foam mattresses. The mattress protectors we offer are very thin and are guaranteed to be water proof and skin cell proof. The best of our protectors also have a cooling system built in so that you can enjoy cooling effects without paying top dollar for a mattress that does the same thing.

3 Benefits of Adjustable Bases

There is one common statement that I hear from my customers who own an adjustable bases; “I Love it.” I have yet to have someone say they don’t.  There are three common reason and benefits to adjustable bases that everyone should consider that we can all share in.
  1. Alleviation of pressure on the lower back and other problematic areas.  From my personal experience and my customers this is probably the largest benefit that we talk about.  When you lie on your back without an adjustable you might not notice the pressure and tightness in your lower back, but lift your head and feet slightly with an adjustable base and you can feel that pressure and tightness that you didn’t even know you had just ease away.  From a comfort standpoint this is the largest benefit and one that every loves.
  2. Ease of Reading and Watching TV.  We all have tried to lie in bed and read, holding the book over you head and having it fall in your face, propping our head up with pillows and getting a crick in our neck, or trying to watch TV and not able to get comfortable.  I take it for granted now that I can just lift my head up until I’m at the perfect angle to watch tv, work on my laptop and stay in my Pajamas.
  3. Sleep Apnea, heart burn ect.  This is one of those things that depending on you talk to depends on the answer you get.  While it doesn’t fix or cure these issues I can tell you from personal experience that I don’t nearly have the same heart burn or acid reflux I use to.  Now I could probably just skip the evening snack, but it’s my favorite.  There are countless health benefits that have been reported for adjustable bases; from sleep apnea to helping with poor blood circulation.  Even if you don’t have poor circulation we could all benefit from a little help.
An adjustable base isn’t just about comfort in bed, while that is a great reason.  It’s about health, better sleeping, better support, and overall getting the type of sleep you deserve that makes you feel refreshed and ready to go in the morning. I would say it’s not for everyone but as a stomach sleeper my self; switching to an adjustable base and sleeping on my back, I have never felt better!

What problems do you have sleeping? I bet that an adjustable base can help. Give us a call at one of our 16 store locations.

4 Common Mattress Sizes

One of the most common questions we get when a customer comes in looking for a mattress is the size. Most people know the basics such as twin, queen and king but what does that really mean? There are a few questions you should ask yourself when selecting which size mattress.

  • How happy are you with your current sleeping space?
  • Is the room big enough for a larger mattress?
  • Let’s take a closer look at each size
Twin: The average measurements of a twin mattress is W 39” x L 74” which is a great size for kids, small rooms or spaces and for a single adult. If you need a little bit longer mattress look for a Twin XL which has the same width but is 6” longer.

Full or Double: is a great size for growing kids, they offer 16” more width while keeping the length the same 74”. While a great size for growing kids or even an adult, if they are much over 5’6” it might be a little tight and a Queen size may work better.

Queen: Is the most popular and common size, it measures 60” x 80” and can accommodate two adults. The mattress fits in most rooms and is a great choice for couples who like to sleep a little closer or singles that like to sprawl out.

King : If your room can fit it and you like plenty of space to sprawl out, you should look at a King. King size dimensions are 76”x80” and are the widest size when it comes to the standard retail mattresses. If you want a little more length the Cal King is 4” longer but is also 4” narrower than a standard king mattress.

If you’re not sure which size is best, measure your room and come in, one of our mattress experts will help you find exactly what you’re looking for.

Sweet Dreams: 6 Tips for Buying the Perfect Mattress

Recently, my husband and I decided we were finished with waking up each morning feeling like our backs had been run over by a series of tiny trucks, courtesy of our old mattress. We headed to the nearest furniture store to search for a suitable and affordable replacement, thinking, how hard can it be to select a comfortable mattress? The answer may surprise you, especially if you haven’t shopped for a new mattress in recent years. The selection of various types of filler material, firmness, and even technology level has exploded in the past decade, to the point where you may become so overwhelmed with the abundance of choices that you decide to just go back home and sleep on your lumpy bed of torture. Before you get in over your head, take a look at the following tips we’ve picked out to help keep your head on straight and choose the best mattress for you and your partner.

Expect to buy a new mattress every 8-10 years. Even the best mattresses aren’t designed to last forever; after all, you spend a third of your life sleeping. Any home furnishing that gets that amount of use needs to be replaced periodically, and a mattress is no exception. You should be able to expect a life span of 8 to 10 years from your new mattress, so keep that in mind when selecting your level of firmness. A bed that starts out very soft and plushy may be uncomfortably so a few years down the road.

If it feels too hard, don’t buy it. On the other hand, selecting an extra-firm mattress just to ensure that it won’t be saggy in a couple of years isn’t a great idea either. Select a firmness level that feels right for you now, or you will be stuck with a too-hard mattress while waiting for time to work its magic.

Know your mattress types. When it comes to your personal level of comfort, it is important to know which type you prefer. There is a vast difference between the feel of a traditional coil mattress and memory foam. Some mattresses, like the one we ended up getting, are hybrid models, with a memory foam pillow top over coils. People who get too hot in their sleep may prefer to stay away from memory foam, which can retain body heat, though some models now feature foam that is designed to stay cool. If you feel that you can use an education in the different types of mattresses, have a sales rep thoroughly explain the pros and cons of each.

Try the floor models (and don’t be embarrassed.) OK, it is plain awkward to lie down on a floor model at the mattress store in front of everybody, turning this way and that in an approximation of how you sleep, in order to select the best mattress for your needs. But just remember, you are at a mattress store, surrounded by other people who are buying mattresses and going through the same process, so try to lose the embarrassment and really get into testing them out for at least 15 minutes each.

Remember your partner. If you and your partner can’t agree on the level of firmness for your mattress, consider an option with adjustable firmness on each side of the bed. Also, going for a king-size bed, while initially more expensive, can give you the kind of space you and your partner need to achieve a restful night’s sleep, especially if one of you kicks, snores, or tosses. Just remember, happy wife (or husband)= happy life!

Be aware of the return policy. OK, true story: my husband and I selected a mattress that seemed very comfortable in the store, only to have it delivered and find out that it was considerably more firm than the floor model. (Translation: we spent four nights feeling like we had slept on a wooden pallet.) Needless to say, we were dismayed that we had just spent a large amount of money on a bed that made us feel even worse than the old one! Luckily, the store where we purchased our mattress had a 30-day return policy and we were able to switch it out for the next softest one, and now we are in heaven every night. Before committing to any mattress purchase, make sure to scope out the return policy.

What type of mattress do you like best? Let us know in the comments section below.

Improve the Quality of Your Sleep

How do you know if it’s time to replace your mattress or if it’s just time to change your habits? Read the tips and statistics from Sleep Savvy Magazine below to learn how to improve the quality of your sleep.

How to Get the Best Sleep You Can!

  • Commit to seven to eight hours of sleep. The average adult needs this many hours of quality sleep each night. Work backward from your wake time.
  • Keep regular sleep hours. Make sleep a priority by keeping consistent bedtime and wake schedules – even on the weekends.
  • Exercise during the day. Even moderate exercise, such as walking, can help you sleep better. Just make sure you don’t’ work out within two hours of bed time.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed. Alcohol and caffeine can interfere with sleep habits. Smokers also should avoid tobacco before bed.
  • Eat light at night. Finish eating at least two to three hours before bed. Eating too close to bedtime can disturb sleep quality.
  • Relax before bed. Create a bedtime ritual that is relaxing. Experts recommend reading a book, listening to soothing music or soaking in a hot bath or shower.
  • Create a sleep sanctuary. Transform your room into a haven of comfort and relaxation. Make sure your room is cool, quiet and free of distraction for the best possible sleep.
  • Evaluate your mattress and pillows provide the proper comfort and support. If your mattress is seven years older or older, it may be time for a new one. In general, pillows should be replaced every year.

Interesting Sleep Facts

Sleep Deprivation Equals Being Drunk On the Job

Don’t think having the best bed for you is necessary or important? It is – it not only improves your sleep but improves your ability to function while you’re awake. According to researchers in the Sleep Medicine Division of Harvard Medical School, it has been proven that sleep deprivation is the equal cognitive impairment as alcohol consumption. Crazy, huh? This sleep deprivation is costing companies $63 billion a year from insomnia and other health and productivity-related problems. Insomnia is most likely affecting your personal life as well. So, maybe it’s time to re-think getting that new mattress?

The Language of Sleep

A study conducted at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville shows that the words involved in coaxing your brain to sleep may be an important factor in the amount of sleep you get. Participants, who were exposed to sleep-related words like “cozy” and “relax” for five minutes before napping, snoozed 47% longer than those who didn’t see the language. It’s been said that reading relaxing words activates goal-oriented mental processes in your brain that help control how tired or wired you feel. Who knew you could talk your body and mind in to being tired?!

4 Signs You Desperately Need A New Mattress Set
  1. You wake up with stiffness, numbness, and aches and pains.
