What happens when you put Christmas lights in the microwave?

For those of us who are curious we often wonder what happens when you put something in the microwave that shouldn't go in the microwave. See what really happens when you put Christmas lights in a microwave....

Don't try this at home.

The fist microwave was invented on accident in 1946. Dr. Percy Spencer, a self taught engineer, was doing tests on a radar-related research project with a new vacuum called magnetron. After doing a test, he reached in his pocket and found that his chocolate bar was melted. This brought curiosity to his mind and he started doing more experiments testing to heat up popcorn and more. What he had invented changed the cooking game forever. Microwave ovens are now used in almost every household and is a multi-million dollar industry.

To get more of the story, check it out in this article.

What happens when we put a light bulb in a microwave?

Here is a great example of something that you should not put in the microwave: a light bulb. Watch to see what happens...

Ever wonder how microwaves work? Microwaves heat up food, or in this case a light bulb, by radio waves. The radio waves are set at a certain frequency to agitate water molecules inside the objects in the microwave. These water molecules vibrate which generates heat that warms up the food.

Stay tuned to see other objects "cook" in the microwave.

4 Main Microwave Types and How to Choose the Best One for You

When most customers think about microwaves they think of two kinds, over the range and countertop microwaves.  The reality of it is that there are much more options. Here are the 4 main microwave types.

Over the Range Microwaves
This is the most common place for the location of a microwave oven as well as cost effective.  The advantage of this location is that it does not take up space on your countertop and also gives you light and ventilation for your range.

Countertop Microwave w/ Trim Kit
Built-in microwaves are great for the consumer that does not want to take up counter space and prefers the look of a hood vent over their range.  The microwave fits flush with the cabinet and a trim kit is installed to make it look built-in.  A little more expensive but a much cleaner look.

Microwave Drawer
These microwaves are fairly uncommon but very practical.  If you not will to give up you cabinetry space or don’t what your microwave visible this is perfect.  These microwaves install under your countertop and extend out instead of the door swinging open.  The price is on the high side but well worth it.

Built-in Microwave Oven
Built-in microwave ovens can be installed in a wall or cabinet.  They give you the appearance of a wall oven with the functionality of a microwave.  Some are even offered with convection giving you the ability to use them as a second oven.

5 Things You Never Realized About Your Kitchen Appliances

 1. How far does your refrigerator stick out?

Most people don’t realize that their fridge sticks out 6 to 8 inches from their counter top.  This is standard, but if you notice that you are shuffling sideways to get between your island and fridge when the door is open you may consider a counter depth refrigerator. For more details, check out the full guide of buying a refrigerator.

    2. New French Door Fridge vs. Old Side by Side Fridge
If you have never owned a French Door Refrigerator this is what you have to look forward to.  No more getting on your knees for fresh vegetables, actually being able to fit a pizza box in your fridge or freezer and not at an angle.  No more losing things in the back of your fridge for months until the stench is overwhelming.

    3. How loud is your dishwasher?
Does your dishwasher sound like a jet engine taking off?  Are you tired of running your dishwasher only at night?  With new technology in sound deafening material dishwasher have become so quiet you don’t even know if it is running.  A good rule of thumb is to look for dishwashers 50dBA or below.  Here is a full guide to buying a dishwasher.

    4. Where to find the serial number on your appliance.
All appliances will have a sticker specifying the model and serial number of the unit.
Refrigerators - most commonly found in the refrigeration portion of the unit either on the upper left or right wall.
Dishwasher – most commonly found on the outer edge of the door or interior where the door seals with the case.
Range – If you slide open your storage door it will be located on the interior door jam either on the left or right hand side.
Microwave – Probably the easiest to find just open the door and it will be located on the inside casing.

    5. The cost of running 15 year old appliances.
In the last 15 years appliances have improved drastically in energy consumption.  With new government regulations as well as new technology it literally pays to buy new appliances.  Take a 15 year old refrigerator for example.  The annual cost of running a side by side refrigerator from the year 2000 is about $190.00 a year!  A new Energy Star Certified model will cost you on average $81.00 a year.  We are talking about a 42% savings.  Over the course of 10 years you could save upwards of $1,100.00 on your electrical bill.  Your new refrigerator will almost pay for itself over its life span.  That is just for your refrigerator.  Imagine the savings on the rest of your household appliances.

Microwave Hacks For Every Day Tasks

Microwaves are found in most every home and their most commonly used for reheating leftovers, defrost, or for their timer... there are other, more clever ways to make good use of your microwave that could simplify several tasks. Here are just a few…

  1. No-Tears Onions: To avoid crying during the process of cutting onions, trim off the ends of the onions and heat them on full power for about 30 seconds. This will alleviate any stinking feeling in your eyes.
  2. Easy Cleaning (probably the best hack): Heat a glass bowl of water with a small amount of vinegar in the microwave for 5 minutes. This will soften the inside debris so you can easily wipe down the microwave with little to no resistance.
  3. Rejuvenate Your Honey: If your honey turns up crystallized the next time you need it, it can be restored! Remove the lid and heat on 50% power for about 2 minutes. (Make sure if you choose to do this, your honey is in a glass jar or another microwavable container)
  4. Juice Your Lemons: Get more juice out of lemons and limes by placing them in the microwave as a whole. Run the microwave on high for 10-20 seconds; this will make them super juicy and easy to squeeze.
  5. Easy Peel: Planning on peeling peaches or tomatoes? Throw a whole peach/tomato into the microwave for 30 seconds on high, allow them to stand for 2 minutes after and the peel will slip off easily.
  6. Make More Space: Need to microwave 2 things at once? Place two bowls into the microwave by balancing one on an upturned mug.
  7. No More Chewy Pizza Crust: Place a glass with a small amount of water into the microwave with your pizza and your crust comes out a lot less chewy.

There are several more hacks out there but these were some of our favorites.
