Coil vs Glass Cooktops/ Ranges

Celebrity Chef Mark Kalix is here today to show us the differences between coil and glass ranges/ cooktops.  He then talks about how you can find great deals on top ranges in our stores in the Clearance Center section. Let's take a look...

Standard Coil

  • Coil ranges are the more traditional option.
  • The coils and drip pans are easy to remove and replace.
  • Coils and drip pans are more affordable to replace.
  • In general, they are more resistant to scratches and bumps.
  • Heating element transfer heat by direct contact.
  • Can be used with all cookware including cast iron.
  • Easy to tell if burners are on because you can see the red coils or flames (gas versions).
  • May take less time to heat up before cooking.

Glass Top

  • Heating elements are hidden underneath glass.
  • Can look more appealing and modern with sleek design.
  • Easy to clean by wiping down with Cerama Bryte glass cleaner.
  • Heating element transfers heat to burner with flat-bottomed cookware the best.
  • Might require specific magnetic pans, but is safer in that you won't burn yourself or other materials.
  • They take less time to cool down once turned off.

We hope that talking about the benefits help you in deciding if coil ranges or glass top ranges are better for you. There are still other featured and options available such as deciding between gas and electric, range or a cooktop, freestanding or slide-in ranges, induction cooking, dual-fuel ranges, and more. Contact one of our stores to ask about any questions that you may have and to go through some of the other features to help decide what is the best for you.

Convert to Gas or Induction? The Choice Is Yours

Many people come into the store wanting and dreaming of converting to gas.  A lot of times this involves a big kitchen remodel project and can come with hefty costs.  There is a great alternative to the time, money, and effort that this takes to switch to gas.  Welcome to the world of induction ranges!

Take a look at the pros and cons of both and it will help you determine which option is best for you.

Gas Ranges
Most professional chefs prefer cooking on gas. Once ignited, the burners respond faster and you do not have to wait for the burners to warm up with conventional electric cooktops or ranges. They are also a little bit easier to clean and maintain. With electric, there seems to be a huge mess after cooking and you have to clean it with a special product and elbow grease. With gas, you just have to remove the steel grate and wipe the crumbs and food way more easily, but not as easily as induction. Gas allows you to use different types of cookware and have your food cook pretty evenly and keeps your pans flat-bottomed.

Benefits of Gas
  • Better control
  • Fast boiling
  • Can use different types of cookware

Drawbacks of Gas
  • Tougher cleanup than induction
  • High cost of conversion
  • At altitude the effectiveness is reduced
  • Can have a gas leak

Induction Ranges
An induction range uses electromagnetic field to heat pots instead of radiant heat that standard electric ranges have. You have to make sure that you have the correct cookware for it to work properly which is magnetic or induction-capable. With induction, your cooking time can be reduced dramatically. The technology allows you to boil water 2 to 4 minutes faster with 6 quarts of water. The surface of induction cooktop stays cooler than the standard smooth top. This will make cleaning easier. Don’t get me wrong, your pot will still get very hot, but with the heat transfer technology, the surface below and around the pot won’t get as hot. Once you take the pot off the heat element, the heat stops and the surface won’t be super hot making it a very safe option, especially if you have kids.
Benefits of Induction
  • Boils water in less than 90 seconds
  • Better control than gas
  • Easy clean up
  • Safe option
  • No conversion or remodeling needed

Drawbacks of Induction
  • It just doesn’t have the flame
  • You need specific cookware
  • There is a buzz sound

How to Install a Range Safely & Properly!

Dustin is here to show you how to install a range in these 5 simple steps.

This is a great video to DIY installing your own range. Please be careful when doing this yourself. Use gloves and have a friend help you.

1. Install the 4-prong cord. We recommend using the 4-prong rather than a 3-prong so that you have a ground wire. Match the different cords with the same cords on the range.

2. Install the anti tip brackets. This is a required safety feature that keeps the range from tipping over. This is helpful if someone leans on the range. These brackets would help them from having the range fall on them.

3. Place the range in the location. We recommend using straps so that you do not scratch the floor and to give you support. Once it is in the spot, make sure that someone helps you plug it in before sliding the range completely into the spot.

4. Level the range to the countertop. Pull the warming drawer out and adjust the back feet first so that the range is at the same height level as the countertops.

5. Place the warming drawer back into the range. You should be all set for using your range.

If you have any questions or need help, please let us know.

Save Energy this Summer with These 13 Appliance Tips

With the weather getting hotter during summer, it can “shock” you when you receive your electricity bill. There are a few things that you can do to make sure your appliances are running efficiently to save you money and energy consumption.

1. Make sure to have ENERGY STAR- rated appliances. These devices are ranked by the U.S. Department of Energy as using less energy than the standard amount. ENERGY Star-rated appliances use about 20% less energy and can save you more than $270 in your energy costs.

Refrigerators:
2. Make sure not to overload the amount of groceries in your refrigerator. Having tons of items in your refrigerator will require more energy to keep it cool.
3. Don’t keep your refrigerator door open for a long period of time. Also make sure to not open your door repeatedly in a short period of time.  Opening the door will cause the cool air inside to escape and makes the refrigerator motor work harder.
4. Keep your refrigerator temperature in between 32- 40 degrees F. Your freezer temperature should be set between 30-0 degrees F.

Washing Machines:
5. Using cold water when doing most of your washes can save you money and still have your cloths perfectly cleaned.
6. Just like dishwashers, you should make sure that you run full loads because most washers will use the same amount of electricity.
7. Have a front-load washing machine. Front-load washing machines use two-thirds less water than top-load washing machines, reducing electricity and water.

Drying Machines:
8. Selecting to have a faster spin cycle can help reduce less time to dry your cloths.
9. When the weather is hot, you can dry some of your cloths outside on a clothesline or a drying rack to save energy costs.
10. Place your washing machine in a room that is warmer than a cold location like a cold basement. The warmer air going into the dryer will use less energy to heat the air up.

Dishwashers:
11. Make sure to load your dishwasher fully for each cycle. Most dishwashers use the same amount of electricity and hot water for each load whether it’s a full load or half of a load.

Ovens or ranges:
12. Don’t open your oven door frequently to check on your food. The temperature can drop about 25-30 degrees and requires more energy to regenerate the set temperature.
13. Use glass baking dishes as much as possible. Glass retains heat better than other materials. This can cook your food faster and you can even decrease the oven temperature.

What other things do you do to consume less energy in your home? Leave it in the comments section.

Recipe- Chicken Fajitas

Turn an ordinary day into a fiesta with these healthy, delicious chicken fajitas!

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 pounds skinless, boneless chicken breasts
  • Salt
  • 2 Tbsp canola, safflower, peanut or grapeseed oil (a high smoke point oil)
  • 1 large onion, sliced lengthwise (root to tip) into 1/4-inch strips
  • 3 bell peppers of various colors, sliced into 1/4-inch strips
Marinade
  • 2 Tbsp lime juice
  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 jalapeno, seeded and minced
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
Extras
  • 8-12 flour tortillas
  • Salsa
  • Sliced avocado
  • Sour cream
  • Thinly sliced iceberg lettuce dressed lightly with salt and cider vinegar

Directions:
1 Cut thick chicken breasts in half, horizontally: If chicken breasts are more than half a pound, slice horizontally so that each slice is between ½-inch and ¾-inch thickness. (Note: Don’t pound chicken breasts with a meat tenderizer, as this adversely affects the texture of the meat.)
2 Marinate chicken: Mix marinade ingredients together in a glass or plastic container. Add chicken, mix thoroughly, cover and let marinate at room temperature for at least 1 hour or up to 8 hours in the fridge.
3 Wipe off most marinade, sprinkle chicken with salt: Remove the chicken from the marinade. Wipe off most of the marinade and sprinkle the chicken pieces with salt.
4 Sear chicken on high heat: Heat a large cast iron frying pan on high heat for 1 to 2 minutes. Add a tablespoon of canola oil to the pan.
As soon as the oil begins to smoke, place chicken breast pieces in the pan. Depending on the size of the pan, you may have to work in several batches.
Let chicken cook undisturbed for 2-3 minutes, until you have a good sear. Once seared well on one side, turn pieces over and cook for another 2-3 minutes until well seared on the second side.
5 Stack seared breasts, cover with foil and let rest: Once seared on the second side, remove to a cutting board and cover with aluminum foil to rest for 5 minutes.
Tip: Stack the seared chicken breasts and then cover them in foil. Together they will retain heat better as you cook the peppers and onions.
If you want to test for doneness, cut into one piece with the tip of a sharp knife. It should be just done, if not, you can put it back in the hot pan for a minute or two.
6 Sauté peppers and onions: While the chicken is resting, cook the onions and peppers. Add another tablespoon of oil to the frying pan. Heat on high. As soon as the oil is hot, add the onions and peppers to the pan.
Use a metal spatula to scrape up some of the browned bits from the chicken and stir to coat the onions and peppers with the oil and brown bits. Spread the onions and peppers in an even layer in the pan. Let them cook undisturbed for 2 minutes. You want them to sear with some blackening. Stir the vegetables and continue to cook for another 2 minutes.
7 Slice the chicken and serve: Slice the chicken across the grain into strips. Serve at once with the peppers and onions, some warm tortillas, and sides of shredded cheese, salsa, guacamole, and/or thinly sliced iceberg lettuce dressed with vinegar and salt.

Prep Time: 1 hour 10 minutes  Cook Time: 10 minutes  Serves 4

All About Connected Kitchens

Connected kitchens and homes offer convenience and peace of mind. Using your phone as a remote control for your appliances, you are able to control and monitor your wifi-connected appliances from anywhere, using software that allows the machines to talk to each other.

To get started with connected kitchens, we recommend having your refrigerator be the first connected kitchen item to add to your home. Here are a few things that you can do with your connected refrigerator:
  • View items that are currently stocked in your refrigerator via your phone.
  •  Stay organized by checking off items that you may need for recipes.
  • Have the convenience of buying groceries online straight from your refrigerator LCD panel.
  • Leave sticky notes electronically on your refrigerator and connect them to your phone.

Use your mobile phone and other connected devices to:
  • Preheat your oven while you're heading home from work
  • Schedule hot water to turn on for your coffee
  • Set your washing machine to spin
  • Keep your clothes wrinkle-free with an extended tumble feature app
  •  Automatically order fabric softener
  •  Place an order of dog food before your current batch runs out

Have peace of mind and get alerts when not at home though different apps:
  • If you left your oven on
  • The dishwasher sprung a leak
  • The refrigerator door was left open
  • An ingredient is expiring or running low

Some wifi connected devices and apps to partner with your connected appliances:
  • Amazon Echo
  • Amazon Alexa
  • Amazon Dash Replenishment
  • Google Home

It's Pizza Time!

National Pizza Day in the U.S.A is on February 9th.  We challenge you to make your own pizza this year in your kitchen. Here are a couple of facts and tips that can help you make your pizza night deliciously exciting!

4 Fun Facts About Pizza
  • On average, 93% of American’s eat pizza at least once a month.
  • Americans eat 46 pizza slices per year.
  • 17% of restaurants in the U.S. are pizzerias.
  • The first pizza in the United States was sold in 1905 at a place called Lombardi’s.

3 Kitchen tips for Pizza Lovers
The average temperatures of ovens in pizza restaurants are set between 700 and 800 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature is greater because they cook at greater volumes and to make the pizzas cook faster. Unfortunately, the average oven in a home kitchen cannot reach that high of a temperature. We recommend setting your oven at 450 degrees Fahrenheit when cooking your own pizza.

We suggest using a duel fuel range because the electric oven allows you to set your temperature and keep the heat consistent throughout the oven. This can allow your pizza to be cooked perfectly throughout the whole pizza with an evenly brown crust and tasty melted cheese.

If you make and store your pizza regularly, we recommend having a 4 door French door refrigerator. The Smart Divider is a great feature that makes easier access to things like pizza pies. You can also control the temperature of the Smart Divider. You can either set it as storage for leftover pizza at a refrigerator temperature or you can have it as a place to keep your frozen pizzas handy with freezing temperatures.

Are you ready to test your cooking skills?  We challenge you to make your favorite pizza pie! Submit a photograph of your pizza masterpiece or tell us what toppings you used in the comments section.

5 Things You Never Realized About Your Kitchen Appliances

 1. How far does your refrigerator stick out?

Most people don’t realize that their fridge sticks out 6 to 8 inches from their counter top.  This is standard, but if you notice that you are shuffling sideways to get between your island and fridge when the door is open you may consider a counter depth refrigerator. For more details, check out the full guide of buying a refrigerator.

    2. New French Door Fridge vs. Old Side by Side Fridge
If you have never owned a French Door Refrigerator this is what you have to look forward to.  No more getting on your knees for fresh vegetables, actually being able to fit a pizza box in your fridge or freezer and not at an angle.  No more losing things in the back of your fridge for months until the stench is overwhelming.

    3. How loud is your dishwasher?
Does your dishwasher sound like a jet engine taking off?  Are you tired of running your dishwasher only at night?  With new technology in sound deafening material dishwasher have become so quiet you don’t even know if it is running.  A good rule of thumb is to look for dishwashers 50dBA or below.  Here is a full guide to buying a dishwasher.

    4. Where to find the serial number on your appliance.
All appliances will have a sticker specifying the model and serial number of the unit.
Refrigerators - most commonly found in the refrigeration portion of the unit either on the upper left or right wall.
Dishwasher – most commonly found on the outer edge of the door or interior where the door seals with the case.
Range – If you slide open your storage door it will be located on the interior door jam either on the left or right hand side.
Microwave – Probably the easiest to find just open the door and it will be located on the inside casing.

    5. The cost of running 15 year old appliances.
In the last 15 years appliances have improved drastically in energy consumption.  With new government regulations as well as new technology it literally pays to buy new appliances.  Take a 15 year old refrigerator for example.  The annual cost of running a side by side refrigerator from the year 2000 is about $190.00 a year!  A new Energy Star Certified model will cost you on average $81.00 a year.  We are talking about a 42% savings.  Over the course of 10 years you could save upwards of $1,100.00 on your electrical bill.  Your new refrigerator will almost pay for itself over its life span.  That is just for your refrigerator.  Imagine the savings on the rest of your household appliances.

Your Guide to Smart Home Devices- Part 3

This is the third installment of our 3-part series about smart home devices and appliances. Today we focus on appliances that are changing the meaning of the word “efficiency,” one technological breakthrough at a time. Check out parts 1 and 2 for more recommendations on the most brilliant smart home innovations of 2016!

Samsung Family Hub Refrigerator, starts at $5,599 - Samsung, leading pioneer of smart home appliance integration, has done it again with its beautifully-designed Family Hub refrigerator. Unlike previous iterations of Samsung smart fridges, this one is fully compatible with Alexa, Amazon’s voice assistant, and will work in conjunction with your smartphones and even stream TV! (Oh, yeah, and it does a great job of keeping food cold too.) Marvel at the 21.5-inch touchscreen that allows you to send and receive messages from your family and friends’ smartphones, share your calendars so your appointments are always handy for viewing, and display family photos (you can take snapshots of your kids’ artwork for a futuristic spin on the old refrigerator magnet!) Dazzle your friends with the efficiency of ordering groceries right from your fridge, courtesy of Alexa. If you have dreamed of talking to your refrigerator (oh, is that just me? Awkward.) this is the refrigerator for you. Of course, all this technology and innovation doesn’t come cheap- the Samsung Family Hub starts at $5,599 for the standard depth stainless steel model, and a counter-depth black stainless model will cost you in the neighborhood of $5,999. You can find one here for a better deal.

LG Smart ThinQ Washer and Dryer, from $1,599.99 each-Wouldn’t it be nice if you could check the status of your wash or dry cycle from your smartphone? The gorgeous stainless steel construction and sleek design make this a washer/dryer combo you’ll want to show off, and the WaveForce washing technology and TrueStream drying technology help to make each load come out perfectly every time, with no hassle. Best of all, it was recently announced that the entire line of LG Smart ThinQ appliances will soon be adding Alexa (via a Smart ThinQ hub, sold separately), which means your washer and dryer will be able to seamlessly integrate with the rest of your smart home in the very near future. Here is one that we recommend.

GE WiFi Connect Free-Standing Convection Range, starts at $2,099- Turn your smartphone into a remote control for your stovetop and oven with a WiFi Connect range from GE! The appliance giant has gotten into the smart home arena in a big way with a line of free-standing ranges as well as cooktops and wall ovens that can be turned on, off, preheated and more via a smartphone app! Using an IFTTT (If This Then That) “recipe,” Alexa can even be used to trigger on/off verbal commands. Best of all, none of the cooking efficiency is sacrificed in the name of technology- the GE free-standing convection range boasts the largest integrated griddle on the market, as well as a gas convection oven that circulates heat for maximum cooking results every time. Create Your Own Professional-Quality Kitchen!

Have you ever wondered how professional chefs set up their own kitchens at home? Certainly they’re the experts, since they spent a large part of their days cooking, prepping and cleaning up kitchens on the job. Here are a few tips to give your home kitchen the pro chef treatment- without breaking the bank!

Open up- Most professional chefs love open-plan kitchens as a great way to entertain and cook at the same time. Instead of spending their dinner parties sequestered in a walled-off kitchen, this way chefs can interact with their guests, have fun, and even show off a bit as they prepare amazing meals when company comes over.

Pay attention to the “kitchen work triangle”- This refers to the small area comprised of the refrigerator, prep area and stove/oven area. These three important locations are commonly found near one another in a typical kitchen layout- a chef doesn’t want to have to go all the way from one end of the kitchen to another as she is working. Though large kitchens with tons of counter space are becoming quite popular in modern home layouts, chefs don’t necessarily need or even want all that space, and prefer to keep a tight work space, with one designated zone for each part of the cooking process.

Group your utensils- Worry less about what looks nice and more about what works well. Functionality beats form when it comes to kitchen utensils, and chefs recommend putting all the utensils you use most into a container on the spot on your counter where you do the most cooking. Of course, design and practicality can have a happy medium- look for fun, cool-looking containers that go with the personality of your kitchen and serve their purpose.

Buy good cooking implements- It’s tempting to go for the bargain items that may not work as well, but come at a lower price. However, chefs recommend that you buy high-quality, highly-recommended cookware, utensils and appliances which will not only work better but last longer, saving you money in the long run.

Self-Cleaning Before The Holiday Can Lead To Disaster!

As the holiday season approaches, everyone is making plans for friends and family to visit; this means large gatherings, meals, parties, etc. Basically, who ever is hosting that year is putting their house on display more during these holidays than any other time of the year. This much traffic in the house only means one thing to several home owners: TIME TO CLEAN!
Of course the rest of the house will be eyed top-to-bottom to be cleaned, fixed, adjusted, etc. But one single appliance, in one single room tends to get a lot of this attention during the holidays as it is the star of all these shenanigans - the all mighty oven. Unfortunately, it typically gets thought of to be cleaned last minute. As the month of November flies by and you get caught up in ensuring the cleanliness of the entire house; typically a day or two before the feast is when it finally comes to thought that maybe the oven should get cleaned. "Oh, well I have a self-cleaning oven," you might think. DON'T DO IT!
As convenient as the self-cleaning feature sounds in the moment of panic, it is a bad idea to use this feature the day right before the festivities. If you are going to use this feature, make sure  you use it a couple WEEKS before, and this is why...
Self cleaning ovens typically reach more than nearly triple the temperature during the cleaning process - this is very hard on your oven. Using the self-cleaning feature usually leads to some kind of oven complication, whether it be blowing a fuse, breaking the handle, or any other sort of damage. It is very common for something to break or go wrong, which means you will have to have time for repairs. People don't normally think about allowing time for repairs "because their ovens are too reliable and haven't had anything go wrong before", but if you break the oven before the day of the feast, you've got a huge problem on your hands.
My point is, if you're going to use the self-clean option, please make sure to do it several weeks before the event. Don't worry, if you forget, you can always look up homemade recipes that will be safe to use in your oven that will take care of the mess without creating a new problem. You  might have to use a little elbow grease, but that's a lot cheaper and way more convenient than purchasing a new oven or a service call.
