What's Best: Counter Depth or Full Size Refrigerator
Kevin Drako is here today to explain the difference between counter depth and full size refrigerators.
If you look closely at your current refrigerator, you may notice that it sticks out beyond the counter. Most refrigerators are like this and is called full size or standard depth refrigeration.
Counter depth refers to where the refrigerator alignment with the counter tops. This means that the refrigerator front is flush with the counter that is next to the refrigerator. The only thing that will stick out is the doors when you open it all the way. This option is all about looks and people that might be particular about things lining up just perfectly. The disadvantage with this refrigerator option is that there will actually be less usable space in the refrigerator and the cost of counter depth is usually more than standard depth. You may want to consider counter depth if you have less room in your kitchen as it frees up space.
Stop by one of our stores to see the difference yourself and to decide which options is best for you.

The Difference Between French Door vs Side-By-Side Refrigerator
Kevin Drako is here to show you a few things to consider when deciding if a French door or side-by-side refrigerator is best for you and your family.
The big question that you should ask yourself is "does my family eat more frozen foods or fresh foods"? This question can determine if you need a unit with more freezer space or refrigerator space.
If your family makes a lot of big dishes with over-sized baking trays, you will need that extra room in your refrigerator and a French door option might be best. If you eat tons of sandwiches and pack on a bunch of meat, cheese, and veggies the deli pantry and refrigerator doors in a French door might be very useful for you. If you eat tons of fruits and veggies (like your suppose to) and more natural foods, a French door is going to be a great choice.
On the other side, if your family makes a lot of frozen foods such as frozen pizza, lasagna, or other frozen meals, a side-by-side might be a better option. With a French door, you have to stack your frozen foods on top of each other, making it hard to reach things or even see some of the foods that you have in your freezer. You may also get into situations where you have to bend over or get on your knees to maneuver through the things in your freezer.
If you have children, there are a few things to consider. If you want them to learn how to be independent and grab their own snacks and help out with dinner, think about how tall they are and that it might be a little harder for them to get things that are in a French door fridge. A side-by- side is nice in that you can see and grab things from both the freezer and refrigerator side equally and more easily than a French door. You can also see and grab all of the frozen foods a little more easily.
Can you fit a frozen turkey in a side-by-side? Maybe a small one, but probably not a big one. You may want to consider having a chest freezer in the garage or basement. If you have a side-by-side and make a big casserole, you might not have enough room to put it in your fridge and may consider getting a second fridge and keep it in the garage or basement. If you choose a French door, you might need more freezer space and need to get a chest freezer or second fridge.
The options are endless. After watching this video which option is best for you and why? If you have more questions, stop by one of our locations and we can answer any additional questions or concerns you may have. It's always best to see these options in person.
The great thing about both units is that French doors and side-by-side refrigerators both have options of having a water and ice dispenser in the front with control panels. Both have options to not have this in the front. The other great thing is that both units come in different finish options. You can match your other appliances with different colors such as white, black, stainless steel, slate, black stainless steel, and more.

How to Change a Refrigerator Water Filter!
Nate is here to show you how to replace water filters. Watch the video below.
Why you should replace your water filter
Changing out your water filter can keep small weird chunks out of your ice and will make your water and ice more clear. The water filter stops you from drinking some of the hard water, mineral buildup, or other chemicals that could be harmful. The filter can also protect you and your family from drinking some of the bad bacteria and microscopic organisms that can make people get sick. Some people even say that they can taste and/ or smell the water when there is a buildup of minerals in the water.
We definitely recommend that you should be filtering your water to not only make it taste and smell better, but because it is healthier for you. Let us know if you have any specific questions about your water filter. Find one of our locations near you to buy a new one.

When and how to replace your water filter
Most refrigerators now a days will have a light or some type of alarm that goes off to notify you when you should change it to get fresh water. If your refrigerator does not have this capability, the rule of thumb is to change it out every 6- 12 months.
The location of the water filer can be in different locations depending on the brand and model of your refrigerator. Please see your manual to find the location. Once you find it, open pop the lid and twist the filter with a half turn and it will pop right off. After you change it, make sure to run your water 2-3 gallons to get rid of the air bubbles and get all of the sediments out. Let your ice machine make one cycle of ice and trough it out. You should be all set after this!

How to Change a Refrigerator Water Filter!
Nate is here to show you how to change your refrigerator water filter and why it is important to change it regularly.
You should change your water filter every 6-12 months to keep the water tasting fresh and to keep your ice from not creating weird chunks and keeping the ice chunks clear.
In this demonstration, Nate shows you how to swap out a water filter in a Kitchen Aid French Door. Different brands and models might be slightly different or in a different area, but is roughly the same process.
Find the access button to the water filter, and push the access button. Twist the filter about a quarter turn and pull off the filter. When putting the new filter in just twist the opposite way and you should be good to go.
Once your replace the filter, you will want to run the water for about 2-3 gallons to get all the air bubbles out and to make sure you are getting the "new" water that is going through the filter. For your ice, you will want to run one tray of ice and toss it out so that you have nice and fresh ice with no sediments.
There you go! You should be all set.
If you have any questions about how to change your water filter, leave them in the comments or call one of the stores and they can help you out.

Freezer Needs for Storing Your Home Garden Harvest
So, it’s that time
of year again….you home garden needs to be harvested, you’re planning your fall
hunting trip, you need to stock up at the grocery store….and you need a new
freezer!
There are a few
things to consider when purchasing your new freezer. Here are a few questions to answer to help you
decide what your freezer needs are:
- What types of foods are we putting in this freezer?
- How long will the food be in the freezer?
- Where will the freezer be located in the home?
- Should we get an upright, or a chest freezer?
- Frost-free, or manual-defrost?
- What size should we get?
If you are looking
for a freezer to use for your regular day-to-day grocery needs, then a
frost-free upright unit might be good for you.
These units do not build-up with ice and are best served for the foods
that your family will go through on a regular basis. If you are looking for more
long-term storage, then a manual-defrost chest type freezer would be best. These units keep your food deep-frozen, while
the unit may build up with ice, your food will not get freezer burned. When you open a chest freezer, the cold air
stays down in the freezer. When you open
an upright freezer, the cold air tends to escape. Chest freezers can hold a lot of food;
however, some may find that keeping an upright freezer makes it easier to
organize your groceries.
If you are going
to put your freezer in the garage, make sure that where you put it doesn’t
reach below -5 degrees F or above 110 degrees F. Put it
along a joining wall with your home.
A freezer will hold approx 35 lbs of food per cu. Ft., so a
15 cu. ft. chest freezer should store approximately 525 lbs of food.
Chest freezers come in a variety of sizes from 5 cu. ft. all
the way up to 25 cu. ft., and range anywhere from $145-$799.
Upright Freezers are usually in the 14-21 cu. ft. size and
range between $399 & $899.
Come see your home-town appliance team today so that we can
help you pick out the right freezer for your family. We have standard sizes available, but can
special order any size freezer that suits your needs.
Let us know if you
have any questions about freezers and storing your food. Leave it in the
comments section.

Save Energy this Summer with These 13 Appliance Tips
With the weather getting hotter during summer, it can “shock”
you when you receive your electricity bill. There are a few things that you can
do to make sure your appliances are running efficiently to save you money and
energy consumption.
1. Make sure to have ENERGY STAR- rated appliances. These
devices are ranked by the U.S. Department of Energy as using less energy than
the standard amount. ENERGY Star-rated appliances use about 20% less energy and
can save you more than $270 in your energy costs.
2. Make sure not to overload the amount of groceries in your
refrigerator. Having tons of items in your refrigerator will require more
energy to keep it cool.
3. Don’t keep your refrigerator door open for a long period of
time. Also make sure to not open your door repeatedly in a short period of
time. Opening the door will cause the
cool air inside to escape and makes the refrigerator motor work harder.
4. Keep your refrigerator temperature in between 32- 40 degrees
F. Your freezer temperature should be set between 30-0 degrees F.
5. Using cold water when doing most of your washes can save you
money and still have your cloths perfectly cleaned.
6. Just like dishwashers, you should make sure that you run
full loads because most washers will use the same amount of electricity.
7. Have a front-load washing machine. Front-load washing
machines use two-thirds less water than top-load washing machines, reducing
electricity and water.
8. Selecting to have a faster spin cycle can help reduce less
time to dry your cloths.
9. When the weather is hot, you can dry some of your cloths
outside on a clothesline or a drying rack to save energy costs.
10. Place your washing machine in a room that is warmer than a
cold location like a cold basement. The warmer air going into the dryer will
use less energy to heat the air up.
Dishwashers:
11. Make sure to load your dishwasher fully for each cycle. Most
dishwashers use the same amount of electricity and hot water for each load
whether it’s a full load or half of a load.
12. Don’t open your oven door frequently to check on your food.
The temperature can drop about 25-30 degrees and requires more energy to
regenerate the set temperature.
13. Use glass baking dishes as much as possible. Glass retains
heat better than other materials. This can cook your food faster and you can
even decrease the oven temperature.

you do to consume less energy in your home? Leave it in the comments section.

4 Smudge-Proof Finish Options
So, it’s been a
while since you’ve upgraded your appliances and you’re thinking that with the
Holidays coming up that this might be the right time to do it. In looking for appliances you will find that
while stainless steel is certainly the most popular, and available finish, it
may not be the right finish for your household.
Stainless Steel,
while very attractive, can be a challenge to keep looking great. Black & White appliances are limited in
availability…and may actually cost you more!
Never fear, new finishes are here!
There are several
new finishes available in a variety of brands that can offer your kitchen a
luxurious look, without the luxurious price. Here are 4 different finishes to look into:
A very “Family
Friendly” appliance. Nice features at an
affordable price, with a very popular smudge-proof stainless steel finish. For
the families that cook!
Frigidaire
Professional
This line offers a
smudge-proof finish, while offering a “Pro-Style” look. For the households that
entertain.
LG Black
Stainless
This new finish offers an “acid-treated” stainless which is
then coated with a smudge-proof outer coating.
Very luxurious and family friendly.
GE Slate
GE offers 90% of their line of appliances in this rich new finish, perfect if
you prefer more of a Satin Finish, not a High Gloss.
There are many more options to choose from, I have only
listed a few. Come see us today so that
we can show you more options in Samsung and Kitchen Aid, we hope to see you
soon!

All About Connected Kitchens
Connected kitchens and
homes offer convenience and peace of mind. Using your phone as a remote control
for your appliances, you are able to control and monitor your
wifi-connected appliances from anywhere, using software that allows the
machines to talk to each other.
To get started with
connected kitchens, we recommend having your refrigerator be the first
connected kitchen item to add to your home. Here are a few things that you can
do with your connected refrigerator:
- View items that are currently stocked in your refrigerator via your phone.
- Stay organized by checking off items that you may need for recipes.
- Have the convenience of buying groceries online straight from your refrigerator LCD panel.
- Leave sticky notes electronically on your refrigerator and connect them to your phone.
Use your mobile phone
and other connected devices to:
- Preheat your oven while you're heading home from work
- Schedule hot water to turn on for your coffee
- Set your washing machine to spin
- Keep your clothes wrinkle-free with an extended tumble feature app
- Automatically order fabric softener
- Place an order of dog food before your current batch runs out
Have peace of mind and
get alerts when not at home though different apps:
- If you left your oven on
- The dishwasher sprung a leak

- An ingredient is expiring or running low
Some wifi connected
devices and apps to partner with your connected appliances:
- Amazon Echo
- Amazon Alexa
- Amazon Dash Replenishment

It's Pizza Time!
National Pizza Day in the U.S.A is on February 9th. We challenge you to make your own pizza this
year in your kitchen. Here are a couple of facts and tips that can help you
make your pizza night deliciously exciting!
4 Fun Facts About Pizza
- On average, 93% of American’s eat pizza at least once a month.
- Americans eat 46 pizza slices per year.
- 17% of restaurants in the U.S. are pizzerias.
- The first pizza in the United States was sold in 1905 at a place called Lombardi’s.
3 Kitchen tips for
Pizza Lovers
The average temperatures of ovens in pizza restaurants are
set between 700 and 800 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature is greater
because they cook at greater volumes and to make the pizzas cook faster.
Unfortunately, the average oven in a home kitchen cannot reach that high of a
temperature. We recommend setting your oven at 450 degrees Fahrenheit when
cooking your own pizza.
We suggest using a duel fuel range because the electric oven
allows you to set your temperature and keep the heat consistent throughout the
oven. This can allow your pizza to be cooked perfectly throughout the whole
pizza with an evenly brown crust and tasty melted cheese.
If you make and store your pizza regularly, we recommend
having a 4 door French door refrigerator. The Smart Divider is a great feature
that makes easier access to things like pizza pies. You can also control the
temperature of the Smart Divider. You can either set it as storage for leftover
pizza at a refrigerator temperature or you can have it as a place to keep your
frozen pizzas handy with freezing temperatures.
Are you ready to test your cooking skills? We challenge you to make your favorite pizza
pie! Submit a photograph of your pizza masterpiece or tell us what toppings you
used in the comments section.

Meet the fridge that allows you to see what’s inside, without opening a door!
The greatest new thing in refrigerators are seeing what is inside your fridge without even opening the door. This can save you energy and more. Here is our review of the LG InstaView Door-in-Door Refrigerator (LFXS30796D)
Here’s the facts:
- Smudge and Fingerprint Resistant Finish
- 7 Large Shelves to help optimize your storage
- 3 Pullout Freezer Drawers
- 30 cu. Ft. Interior- Perfect for larger families
- Energy Star Qualified

Our Review:
Glass doors on refrigerators are nothing new, however, LG’s
new take get’s it right. The beautiful mirrored glass is darkened, so it blends
very well with the unique look of LG’s black stainless steel. However, give the
mirrored glass a knock-knock and the powerful LED lights illuminate the
interior of the fridge. See an item that you just can’t resist? Use the
now-popular door-in-door function to grab that perfect snack without the hassle
or use of opening the full refrigerator door.
ke decisions and interact with your refrigerator. While this feature is cool, and could be very useful; you cannot ignore the function of the LFXS30 line of fridges. The 30 cu. ft. interior is vast; not ready to part from Monday’s leftovers? LG says no worries! Additionally, with LG’s LoDecibel Quiet Operation function this refrigerator is much quieter than anything you’ve experienced in the past: no more sleepless nights because the kids think there’s a monster in the kitchen.

Skip the Bottled Water
The other day I was fancying an ice cold bottle of water. The weather in Colorado being unusually nice
these days, it was hot and nothing sounded better than cold, naturally pure
water. I happened to be in a place where
a bottled water dispenser was available and I quickly put 2 crisp dollar bills
into the machine and waited anxiously to hear the “drop” of the bottle
dispensing from the machine.
I took a quick swig and for some reason decided to read the label on
the bottle. “Source: Public Water Supply.” What?
What happened to the all natural water sourced from the volcanic tunnels
of an exotic island and naturally purified using reverse osmosis and then
distilled using an advanced state of the art process powered by solar energy?
My first thought after reading the label….what a waste of $2. Americans spend over $10 billion dollars each
year on bottled water. That figure
represents roughly $1.25 per gallon which is 300x the cost of tap water. There has to be a better solution.
I’ve got one. Most households
have this already sitting in their home.
Their kitchen specifically. It’s
called a refrigerator with a water and ice dispenser. Your refrigerator’s water dispenser
typically provides additional filtration.
Filtration that removes 99% of potential harmful contaminants such as
chlorine taste and odor, heavy metals and chemicals and microbial cysts including
parasites.
So, put your money back in your pocket,
save the Earth from plastic bottles (only 28% are recycled) and push your glass
up against your refrigerator’s water dispenser. You will find tons of different refrigerators that have water dispensers built in that have different features. The Kitchen Aid makes a great refrigerator that has 5 different doors and has a great built-in water and ice dispenser, check it out.

5 Things You Never Realized About Your Kitchen Appliances
1. How
far does your refrigerator stick out?
Most
people don’t realize that their fridge sticks out 6 to 8 inches from their
counter top. This is standard, but if
you notice that you are shuffling sideways to get between your island and
fridge when the door is open you may consider a counter depth refrigerator. For
more details, check out the full guide of buying a refrigerator.
2. New
French Door Fridge vs. Old Side by Side Fridge
If
you have never owned a French Door Refrigerator this is what you have to look
forward to. No more getting on your
knees for fresh vegetables, actually being able to fit a pizza box in your
fridge or freezer and not at an angle. No
more losing things in the back of your fridge for months until the stench is
overwhelming.
3. How
loud is your dishwasher?
Does
your dishwasher sound like a jet engine taking off? Are you tired of running your dishwasher only
at night? With new technology in sound deafening
material dishwasher have become so quiet you don’t even know if it is
running. A good rule of thumb is to look
for dishwashers 50dBA or below. Here is
a full guide to buying a dishwasher.
4. Where
to find the serial number on your appliance.
All
appliances will have a sticker specifying the model and serial number of the
unit.
Refrigerators
- most commonly found in the refrigeration portion of the unit either on the
upper left or right wall.
Dishwasher
– most commonly found on the outer edge of the door or interior where the door
seals with the case.
Range
– If you slide open your storage door it will be located on the interior door
jam either on the left or right hand side.
Microwave –
Probably the easiest to find just open the door and it will be located on the
inside casing.
5. The
cost of running 15 year old appliances.
In the last 15 years appliances have improved
drastically in energy consumption. With
new government regulations as well as new technology it literally pays to buy
new appliances. Take a 15 year old
refrigerator for example. The annual
cost of running a side by side refrigerator from the year 2000 is about $190.00
a year! A new Energy Star Certified model
will cost you on average $81.00 a year.
We are talking about a 42% savings.
Over the course of 10 years you could save upwards of $1,100.00 on your
electrical bill. Your new refrigerator
will almost pay for itself over its life span.
That is just for your refrigerator.
Imagine the savings on the rest of your household appliances.

How to purchase the perfect appliance – from start to finish.
Have you ever purchased (what you thought was) the perfect appliance only to find it doesn’t fit or isn’t what you expected? Maybe you’ve walked into an appliance store only to feel overwhelmed purchasing for a new home or as a first time appliance buyer - whatever your situation, we know it can be challenging to get it just right. We’ve all been there, we’ve been asked the questions, we’ve seen the potential challenges you might face throughout your buying experience and we are here to help!
The team at Appliance Factory & Mattress Kingdom is here to guide you in how to select,
purchase, and walk away satisfied with your new appliances. Over the next few
weeks we will blog about different appliances and help direct you towards a
seamless buying experience. Stay tuned as we teach you what you need to know before,
during and in the completion steps of purchasing your appliances!
Step 1:
Prepare yourself for entering the appliance store.
You would be
surprised how much time a few minutes of preparing can save you in the long run,
or how simple the process can be when you provide us with a few details. (Plus
we know buying an appliance can be a big decision and a little nerve racking as
you go)
*MEASURING THE SPACE:
Before you arrive at
the store to choose your new refrigerator, it’s important to know your space requirements.
If you’re unsure of your measurements, you will probably be going home to measure
or guessing and potentially receiving a refrigerator that’s too high, wide or
doesn’t look right for your space. Refrigerators come in a variety of sizes, as
do homes, and it’s important you take 3 very important measurements: 1. HEIGHT, 2. DEPTH, & 3. Width
*KNOW WHERE YOUR WATER SOURCE IS:
Finding your
water source makes it easy to figure out which refrigerator will fit your space
and if getting one with an ice maker is an option. It’s a common buying mistake
to not check to see if there is water access. Before you purchase, do a simple
check behind where you plan to place your new refrigerator- is there an on/off
valve or a small hose? If you are still unsure, don’t worry we can help- just
snap a few photos of what it looks like back there and we can guide you to the
accessories and/or any adjustments you may need to insure your new fridge runs
just the way you want it to!
*KNOW YOUR CLEARANCE OPTIONS: … (And no that doesn’t mean your best sales prices, though we will
guarantee you the best price for 30 days after your refrigerator purchase!)
When you hear
the word clearance when it comes to a refrigerator we’re referring to any
potential space you would need to clear. Is it going to be next to a wall or in
a narrow space? Will you be able to open up doors that swing to the left and
the right? Will pull out drawers be able to open successfully without hitting
cabinets or other appliances?
…Congratulations, you are prepared to enter the
appliance store! You have eliminated
many potential mistakes that can happen when you don’t do some simple homework.
And now it’s time for you to enter the store and choose what exactly to buy.
Step 2: Choose
the features that make sense.
If you have an idea of what features you may like
in your refrigerator that’s great and if not we will give you an overview of
things to potentially consider:- Is LED lighting important?
- Do you need or want spill proof shelving?
- What type of finish are you looking for? (Finishes vary by brand in
their availability and are black/white, slate, stainless steel, smudge
proof stainless steel, or black stainless).
- Do you want a hot water dispenser? (Yes, they have a refrigerator
with a built in Keurig!)
- Do you have a lot of fresh fruits and veggies? (You might want a
dual compressor as it keeps items at a temperature that is more consistent
than your basic refrigerator).
- Do you need a refrigerator that is counter depth? (You will have a
built in look though you will lose storage space).
- Do you want a door-in-door option? (Energy efficient and provides
quick access).
- Do you want true crisp drawers? (vacuum-seal drawers that help
items last longer).
- Do you need child locks?
- Are you often frustrated by how long it takes to thaw items you
want to immediately enjoy? (If so then you might want to consider a
refrigerator with a Quick Chill feature).
Step 3: Choosing the best Refrigerator capacity.
Most people have heard that
the more capacity you have in a refrigerator the more space but what exactly
does that mean for you in your real life grocery buying scenario?
- 1 bag of groceries = 1cu. Ft (appx); larger families need over 20
cu.ft (4-6cu.ft per adult)

Your Guide to Smart Home Devices- Part 3
This is the third installment of our 3-part series about
smart home devices and appliances. Today we focus on appliances that are
changing the meaning of the word “efficiency,” one technological breakthrough
at a time. Check out parts 1 and 2 for more recommendations on the most
brilliant smart home innovations of 2016!
Samsung Family Hub
Refrigerator, starts at $5,599 - Samsung, leading pioneer of smart home
appliance integration, has done it again with its beautifully-designed Family
Hub refrigerator. Unlike previous iterations of Samsung smart fridges, this one
is fully compatible with Alexa, Amazon’s voice assistant, and will work in
conjunction with your smartphones and even stream TV! (Oh, yeah, and it does a great
job of keeping food cold too.) Marvel at the 21.5-inch touchscreen that allows
you to send and receive messages from your family and friends’ smartphones,
share your calendars so your appointments are always handy for viewing, and
display family photos (you can take snapshots of your kids’ artwork for a
futuristic spin on the old refrigerator magnet!) Dazzle your friends with the
efficiency of ordering groceries right from your fridge, courtesy of Alexa. If
you have dreamed of talking to your refrigerator (oh, is that just me?
Awkward.) this is the refrigerator for you. Of course, all this technology and
innovation doesn’t come cheap- the Samsung Family Hub starts at $5,599 for the
standard depth stainless steel model, and a counter-depth black stainless model
will cost you in the neighborhood of $5,999. You can find one here for a better deal.
LG Smart ThinQ Washer
and Dryer, from $1,599.99 each-Wouldn’t it be nice if you could check the
status of your wash or dry cycle from your smartphone? With the LG Smart ThinQ
washer and dryer combo, to the energy-efficient capabilities designed to
optimize your usage of power, Smart ThinQ washers and dryers are a game-changer
for the way we will do laundry in years to come. The gorgeous stainless steel
construction and sleek design make this a washer/dryer combo you’ll want to
show off, and the WaveForce washing technology and TrueStream drying technology
help to make each load come out perfectly every time, with no hassle. Best of
all, it was recently announced that the entire line of LG Smart ThinQ appliances
will soon be adding Alexa (via a Smart ThinQ hub, sold separately), which means
your washer and dryer will be able to seamlessly integrate with the rest of
your smart home in the very near future. Here is one that we recommend.
GE WiFi Connect
Free-Standing Convection Range, starts at $2,099- Turn your smartphone into
a remote control for your stovetop and oven with a WiFi Connect range from GE!
The appliance giant has gotten into the smart home arena in a big way with a
line of free-standing ranges as well as cooktops and wall ovens that can be
turned on, off, preheated and more via a smartphone app! Using an IFTTT (If
This Then That) “recipe,” Alexa can even be used to trigger on/off verbal
commands. Best of all, none of the cooking efficiency is sacrificed in the name
of technology- the GE free-standing convection range boasts the largest
integrated griddle on the market, as well as a gas convection oven that
circulates heat for maximum cooking results every time. Check out all the details here.
